Saudi Arabia stepped up their preparations for the Asian Cup with a 2-1 win over Singapore

The victory at the home of south-east Asia’s top team was all the more impressive as the Saudis played most of the second half a man down.

Abdulrahman Al Qahtani gave the three-time Asian champions the lead after 26 minutes and eight minutes later, Taiseer Al Jassam made it two.

That was Al Jassam’s last meaningful contribution as he was ejected from play five minutes after the restart for a second bookable offence.

Singapore enjoyed more pressure after that but it wasn’t until the last minutes when they got a consolation goal.

"I'm happy with this victory," the Saudis' Brazilian coach Helio Anjos was quoted on the Asian Football Confederation’s homepage.

"We played with one man less in the second half and we were against a strong team that played quickly.

"Because we are preparing for the Asian Cup the result will give us more confidence in ourselves and in our play," he told the Asian Football Confederation's Web site.

Saudi Arabia kick off their Asian Cup campaign against South Korea in Jakarta on July 11 and go on to face co-hosts Indonesia and Bahrain.
